Valia Shoja, Resident LPC

My Story

I am an Iranian-American Immigrant with lived experience that has given me insight into a variety of challenges faced by underprivileged communities and vulnerable populations. Given my cultural background as an immigrant, I am interested in making mental health services more accessible. I believe in the healing power of stories in building resilience toward collective healing. I believe every human has an authentic inner compass that can guide toward the meaning and purpose in life. My mission is to assist my clients in understanding their values and aspirations. I strive to build a trusting therapeutic relationship with my clients and collaborate toward reaching long-term goals and commitments in a safe space.

I have worked extensively with individuals from Arab, Afghan, Iranian, South Asian, and Muslim communities. I am bilingual in English and Persian (Dari/Farsi).

Educational Background

I earned my master’s in counseling from George Washington University in 2021. Previously, I earned a Master's in Computer Science from Virginia Tech in 2006. Counseling is my second career. I have worked as an IT Consultant and Project Manager for 17 years.

Clinical Experience

I joined Wellness Through Counseling in February 2022 as a resident in counseling under the supervision of Salma Abugideiri, LPC. Before that, I completed my internship with the CA Department of Rehabilitation. I helped people with disabilities achieve independence through employment. I served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for Fairfax Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court, advocating for the best interest of abused and neglected children. I also volunteered for Fairfax County, helping elderly adults with disabilities maintain their quality of life and independence.

Areas of Expertise

I provide individual, couples, and family counseling focused on several issues, such as anxiety, depression, and stress management. I have worked with adult survivors of childhood trauma. I have worked with couples and families experiencing domestic conflicts and cross-cultural and inter-faith marriages, among other issues.

My Approach

I integrate evidence-based, person-centered therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Internal Family System, and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy.
