Rukhsar Chhipa, Marriage and Family Therapist Intern
My Story
I always wanted to enter a profession in the service industry. Although that journey started in the healthcare profession, I took more interest in the mental health aspect of it. I especially saw a gap in mental health services catering to Muslims and south-Asians. I wanted to help people from marginalized communities like mine to access quality mental health services. My journey towards pursuing a career and MFT was influenced by my desire to ensure that everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, orientation, religion, and socioeconomic status, has access to quality mental healthcare services. My commitment to this field is driven by a deep-seated belief in equitable access to mental health services for people of all backgrounds. As a therapist in training, I am deeply committed to addressing and dismantling barriers to mental healthcare, particularly within communities where therapy is often stigmatized and awareness is limited. Personal experiences with significant family changes have inspired me to facilitate healing and resilience in clients navigating similar challenges.
Educational Background
I completed my undergraduate degree in psychology at George Mason University with a concentration in developmental psychology. I am currently pursuing my graduate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Syracuse University and am under the supervision of Salma Abugideiri, LPC.
Areas of Expertise
I aspire to work closely with individuals, couples, and families from marginalized communities with a systems-based approach to therapy, allowing me to address individual struggles and broader relational issues. As a south-Asian immigrant and mother, I love to work with clients struggling with issues related to their identity, having trouble adjusting to a new life stage or transitioning to a new role. I bring a nuanced understanding of family dynamics and cultural identity. My therapeutic approach ideally incorporates spirituality for those who want to incorporate it into their therapy. I am focused on equipping clients with the tools to manage their struggles, build healthy relationships, and overcome adversities by reframing thought processes and fostering better interpersonal understanding. I love to help my clients achieve their goals by supporting them with empathy and insight.
My Approach
I aim to use a systematic approach to therapy with individuals, couples, and families. This holistic approach considers the individual within the broader context of their relationships, helping to address the root causes of problems by exploring how interactions within our systems influence and shape our unique experiences and challenges. Everyone is different; therefore, I believe in taking an integrative, client-centered approach that focuses on the client’s strengths to meet therapy goals. I take an integrative approach to therapy depending on the client and their specific needs. Still, I am inclined toward using CBT, strengths-based therapy, narrative therapy, structural therapy, and Gottman methods. Overall, I provide a judgment-free, safe environment for my clients where, together, we can work toward growth and healing!
