Hufsa Nisar, Clinical Social Worker Intern
My Story
Growing up in a diverse community, I was exposed to various cultures and backgrounds, which sparked my curiosity about how our inner selves work. My active involvement in my local Masjid revealed a significant lack of mental health resources and inspired me to bridge this gap. As the eldest daughter in a South Asian family, I understand firsthand the pressures, expectations, and intergenerational trauma that can impact our mental health.
Fluent in both English and Urdu, I have worked with immigrants from various backgrounds, which deepened my understanding of their unique stressors. This continuous learning has reinforced my commitment to personal and professional growth. Many in my community have shared their mental health struggles with me, seeking a connection between their faith and well-being. This inspired me to pursue a career in therapy, where I aim to offer empathetic, culturally informed support and provide a safe space for individuals to navigate their challenges. As a student, I am open to learning and growing with you throughout this journey.
Educational Background
I earned my Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). I am currently pursuing my Master’s in Social Work at Fort Hays State University (FHSU) and am under the supervision of Dr. Fatima Mirza, PhD, LCSW.
Clinical Experience
I have experience working with clients who have experienced trauma, particularly through my roles at a homeless shelter and refugee resettlement programs. These positions involved addressing complex issues and supporting clients through their recovery. Additionally, I have been involved in planning and organizing events for youth from various backgrounds at my local mosque, which has deepened my understanding of the diverse needs of young people.
Areas of Expertise
I specialize in trauma-informed care and have worked with diverse populations, including individuals facing homelessness and refugees. My services focus on addressing trauma, emotional distress, and related challenges, with an emphasis on creating supportive and healing environments.
My Approach
I utilize a person-centered approach, focusing on each individual’s unique needs and experiences. I am open to exploring different therapeutic strategies and integrating various techniques, and evidence-based practices, to tailor support effectively. I aim to create a compassionate, adaptable therapeutic space fostering healing and personal growth.
